Daruma Doll: The World’s Cutest Motivational Object!
We Love Daruma!
The Daruma doll is one of the most popular and revered symbols of luck in Japan. Rounded, hollow, and designed with a low center of gravity, this “tumbler doll” (okiagari koboshi) bounces right back up when tilted to the side, representing determination and persistence.
Closely associated with the Daruma is the venerated Japanese proverb, “Nana Korobi Yaoki “. When translated means “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” In other words, Never, ever give up on your dreams!
The Daruma is modeled after the founder of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma, the fifth-century Indian sage credited with introducing Zen to Japan. The traditional Daruma doll, with its round shape, represents Bodhidharma in his meditative pose.
The eyes of a Daruma doll eyes are intentionally left blank. When a new doll is brought home, the custom is to colour in one eye with a black marker while thinking about a goal, resolution, or even a wish. Once achieved, the Daruma’s owner can happily colour in the second eye and enjoy a wonderful sense of accomplishment.
Darumas are typically painted red, but also come in yellow, purple, gold, and other colours; each reflecting the sort of goal or wish the doll’s owner has in mind.
- Red: Luck and prosperity – the classic colour
- Yellow: Safety and protection
- Purple: Good health and longevity
- White: Purity – ideal for a loved one
- Gold: Wealth – entrepreneurs take note!
