Music Review: “Ikenaiwa EP” Mooma (Mio Himemiya) Mini-Album

Release date: 13th October 2011

Welcome to the fanciful world of “Mooma” – a solo project created by former HimemaniK member Mio Himemiya. “Ikenaiwa E.P.” is her first mini-album release and features the single “Ikenaiwa” and three new songs.

Musically the album can best be described as whimsical pop with classical overtones that conjure up child-like images of wonder found in a picture book, whilst the lyrics are mature, formulated from a mind that is inquisitive and observant.

Ikenaiwa: A song about a girl’s thoughts and imagination of physical love for someone she wants to get close to. The floating unpredictable melody line is haunting at times with crashing cymbals dominant at times within the mix.

Kutsuwa: Mio’s vocals go a little deeper on this jazzy, upbeat number all about a “love game”. The production summons up a flavour of songstress, Noriko Sakai, who enjoyed much success in the eighties and nineties.

A, un:  An exquisite track, beautifully sung.  Mio describes it as “a really cute song which is full of love.”  A, un and Kutsuwa are used as the closing themes of the FM radio programme Music Bunker.

Amazing Tokyo: The lyrics to this song reflect upon how, as human beings we have changed the way we communicate with one another, and how modern technology, such as the mobile phone has isolated us from the people we are in immediate contact with, people sitting next to us on a bus or train for example. We are surrounded by signs and symbols, but we don’t notice them as we are too absorbed in our personal gadgets.

The compositions on “Ikenaiwa E.P.” is a collaboration between Mio (lyrics) and Mr. Watanabe a.k.a. Frottageshi (melodies), whilst the CD sleeve artwork was done by the artist Aono. It is a very imaginative and interesting piece of work; a very strong debut mini-album that leaves you wanting to hear more.

Once you visit the world of Mooma, you will never want to leave!
