Music Review: Raychell “L>R”
The eagerly anticipated debut album from Japan’s hottest new singing sensation!
Release date: 24 April 2013
This dazzling assortment of songs which consists of a mixture of styles from rock to dance confirms that Raychell is a singer – songwriter of immense talent who is equally comfortable performing ballads as she is up-tempo songs. Her vocal skills are outstanding. She can make a simple tune sound full of meaning and an intricate melody sound easy on the ear.
The opening track, “Coils of Light”, takes the listener on a whimsical dreamlike musical journey which progresses with epic proportion making it ideal as the theme tune to Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen an extension/re-release of the 2012 fantasy videogame Dragon’s Dogma from Capcom. A sophisticated track such as this requires a commanding yet controlled performance… and Raychell nails it.
“FACE FREE” (Hiroaki Hayama), “EARTH BEAT” (Hiroaki Hayama/Raychell), “Never EVER” (Hiroaki Hayama/achaco/Kazushi Miyakoda), “SPECIAL” (Hiroaki Hayama/Yojiro Tabata/Kazushi Miyakoda), “Feel” (Hiroaki Hayama/Raychell) and “Pray to the Moon” (Hiroaki Hayama) all lend themselves to the soundtrack of the new sci-fi action adventure Travelers: Dimension Police (released in selected cinemas in Japan, 13 April 2013) directed by Koichi Sakamoto and starring tokusatsu regulars Nao Nagasawa and Ayumi Kinoshite. The songs, written by perfectly encapsulate the film’s high- energy and sexiness.
The remaining tracks are of equal melodic strength with tight productions backing up Raychell’s solid performance which concludes with “Kono ai de aruyouni”, a song that is filled with romance as the beautiful songstress seduces the listener with her silky vocals, subtly accompanied by a sensual arrangement that leaves the body tingling all over and the mind in a warm pleasurable place.
L>R is an ambitious album that has opened a door for Raychell to show the world what she is truly capable of.
