Press Release: Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival Cardiff, Wales

Saturday 7th June 2014 – Cardiff, Chapter Arts Centre

Saturday 21st June 2014 – Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Kotatsu FestivalIt’s nearly time for this year’s Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival, so we would like to take this opportunity to notify all our newsletter subscribers about this year’s programme and the exciting line-up of films we have for you. First of all some news about when and where the festival will be taking place.

Venues – Cardiff & Aberystwyth

As on previous occasions, we are still holding the main festival day at the Chapter Arts Centre in Canton, Cardiff. This year however, we are changing seasons so we should be basking in June’s summer sunshine instead of November’s snow. We are also extending the festival to include a whole extra day at a new venue, the Aberytswyth Arts Centre, where we will be showing some of the same films too..

So the dates for your diary are as follows:

Saturday 7th June 2014 – Cardiff, Chapter Arts Centre

Saturday 21st June 2014 – Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Both Cardiff & Aberystwyth venues will have the same great films to enjoy, so let’s take a look at what’s on.

  • Patema Inverted (Yasuhiro Yoshiura)
One of the freshest Sci-Fi anime in years, Patema Inverted literally turns its heroine’s world upside down to produce an actionpacked, gravitydefying adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
  • Mai Mai Miracle (Madhouse)
Inspired by her grandfather’s stories, young Shinko embarks on wild flights of fancy about the history of the little town she lives in. But dreams can’t fend off the realities of growing up.
  • Colorful (Keiichi Hara)
A sinful spirit is granted the opportunity to prove worthy for rebirth, inhabiting the body of a student who killed himself.
  • Evangelion 3.0 (Hideaki Anno)
Hideaki Anno’s classic anime series NEON GENESIS EVANGELION is re-imagined in this third installment of a series of vibrantly animated, big-budget feature adaptations.
  • Japanese Marketplace
Another great selection of stalls selling the usual exciting food, games, toys and Japanese paraphernalia. More details on our programme page at the official website.

Are you as mad about Manga and Anime as we are? This year we are holding a Manga drawing workshop, which teaches you how to draw and create characters in the popular Japanese style. You will be taught construction techniques to strengthen your artwork and how to pose your Manga characters. You are also encouraged to bring your own sketchbooks to show Manga Expert Lexémon! She will give you tips and tricks on how to improve your art.

Raffle Tickets

Again this year we are having another of our infamous raffles, with more great prizes up for grabs, and the winners announced in a frantic gap between films around 6pm. Tickets will be available from the beginning of May from the Chapter Box Office and Super Tomato. If you buy tickets but cannot attend or wait for the prize draw at 6pm, please ensure your name/address/telephone are printed on the back of each ticket so we can get in touch should you be fortunate enough to win.

Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival has been running since November 2010 at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff, where it has brought Japanese animé and culture to a widening audience. Now in 2014, we are expanding the festival to include the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, where the same great films can be seen. Hopefully next year we can bring some of the other events to Aberystwyth such as the Workshops, Marketplace and Raffle, so you too can have the full Kotatsu Festival experience.

Please keep an eye on the Kotatsu Festival website for the very latest information, and if you have any questions, please feel free to email us. Contact details can be found on our website.
