NHK World TV - ABU Robot Contest_04 (2)This summer, 18 teams from the Asia-Pacific region took part in the 14th ABU Robocon held in the ancient city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.  The ABU Robocon is an annual contest where university, college and polytechnic students build handmade robots to battle it out in highly competitive contests.

In this year’s contest – Robominton, which will broadcast on NHK World TV on 31st October – each of the country teams built two racket-wielding robots to challenge each other in a fierce doubles badminton tournament.  The programme follows the teams, including students from Japan, China and Vietnam, exploring the different technologies used in the building of the robots and the tactics used to knock out the opposition. Students from Japan’s Waseda University, new to the contest this year, made robots which used air pressure from PET bottles and springs to swing their rackets whilst defending champions and two time winners from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China created fully automatic robots using two high-speed cameras.

The contest aims to create friendship among young people with similar interests, as well as advance engineering and broadcasting technologies in the Asia-Pacific region.
