Hyper Japan 2014 In Pictures

The UK’s biggest celebration of Japanese culture!

Hyper Japan 2014 logoEvery year since it first began back in 2010, the annual London event Hyper Japan keeps getting better and better, not to mention bigger and bigger, and this year’s extravaganza held on 25 – 27 July at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre was no exception.

The fantastic line-up catered to all tastes in Japanese pop-culture from traditional dancers and musicians like the very popular Hyper Japan regulars Hibiki Ichikawa and Akari Mochizuki, who this time around were accompanied by guitarist Hide Takemoto, to contemporary cute J-pop singers Yano Anna, Yun*Chi and the wonderful ‘KimoCos’ (a fashion blend of Kimono and Cosplay) pop duo YANAKIKU (interview), who returned for the second year running much to the delight of their ever increasing UK fanbase. A more whimsical sounding style of music was provided by the lovely songstress Mayuko who sang selected songs from her debut album ‘Vista Bouquet’. Another crowd pleaser that made a second appearance at Hyper Japan was the incredible and unique Siro-A who wowed audiences yet again with their unbelievable light and sound stage performance.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg; other attractions that took place throughout the weekend included a variety of martial art demonstrations, one in particular was by Hiroki the Masked Ninja, wrestling, a Cosplay contest, robots, Hyper Kawaii presented by Naomi Suzuki, and the Eat-Japan Awards 2014 which saw five Japanese restaurants in the UK battling it out to win Sushi of the Year.

Of course, Hyper Japan just wouldn’t be the same without the numerous exhibition booths, food and drinks stalls, and tables selling everything from kawaii costumes and wigs to music CDs and samurai swords, and of course an array of anime and manga-related goodies to keep all otaku satisfied.

As is always the case when reporting on Hyper Japan, there are far too may things to mention in one post, so once again Diverse Japan lets the visuals do the talking. Enjoy!
